Centering Transmasculine and BIPOC

CE Hours 1

About this course

This workshop offers a clinically-grounded, identity-affirming framework for treating eating disorders in transgender clients, with particular attention to transmasculine individuals and transgender people of color. Attendees will explore the diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria and consider how intersecting identities shape the lived experience of body image distress and disordered eating. We will examine current best practices in gender-affirming eating disorder care, drawing from recent research and emerging therapeutic models. Additionally, participants will engage with excerpts from interviews conducted with transgender providers, highlighting real-world applications of inclusive and ethical treatment. Through case-informed reflection and theoretical dialogue, this session will equip clinicians with deeper insight and actionable tools to support transgender clients in ways that affirm identity, reduce harm, and foster healing.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe gender dysphoria and its current diagnostic criteria and articulate how experiences of dysphoria may uniquely impact transmasculine clients and trans clients of color.
  • Identify at least three evidence-based practices for delivering gender-affirming eating disorder care to transgender clients.
  • Integrate clinical insights from transgender providers to enhance cultural responsiveness and inclusivity in eating disorder treatment.
