Cómo Abordar el trastorno de estrés postraumático y los trastornos alimentarios en adolescentes | Tackling PTSD and Eating Disorders in Teens

CE Hours 1

About this course

Eating disorders (EDs) in adolescents are frequently accompanied by a history of trauma, yet the role of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in shaping ED symptom severity remains underexamined in youth. This presentation will share updated research and clinician insights to explore the link between PTSD and ED's in adolescents and strategies for assessment and treatment. Specifically, findings from a large-scale study of adolescents in residential eating disorder treatment will be presented to explore the association between PTSD and increased ED severity for adolescents. Furthermore, this presentation will examine how PTSD may amplify ED behaviors through mechanisms such as emotional dysregulation, dissociation, and self-directed blame. Clinical implications for assessment, treatment planning, and intervention will be discussed, with a focus on the integration of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) into ED care models. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how co-occurring PTSD may shape the trajectory of adolescent EDs, and why addressing these symptoms is critical for lasting recovery.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the association and discuss the impact of PTSD and increased eating disorder severity in adolescents.
  • Utilize evidence-based assessment and treatment, including Cognitive Processing Therapy, for concurrent PTSD and eating disorders.
  • Explain how PTSD-related mechanisms such as emotional dysregulation, dissociation, and self-blame contribute to disordered eating.
