Dynamic Duos of Body Neutrality

CE Hours 1

About this course

In recent years, psychoeducation on body neutrality has displaced body positivity in eating disorder treatment, as body positivity was viewed as unattainable for eating disorder populations and also kept the body as the central focus. Body neutrality emphasizes respect and functionality over appearance. This framework is particularly useful for individuals struggling with body dysmorphia, chronic illness, eating disorders, or identity-based marginalization. The body neutrality exercises presented in this workshop explore its intersection with social justice, trauma-informed care, disability studies, and anti-diet paradigms. This includes recognizing systemic pressures that shape bodily ideals, challenging aesthetic-based validation, and cultivating mindfulness-based body awareness. Participants will learn how practicing body neutrality can lead to decreased body surveillance, increased self-compassion, and a healthier relationship with food, movement, and self-image. As a therapeutic and cultural model, body neutrality fosters resilience by creating space for bodily autonomy without the pressure of constant positivity.

Learning Objectives

  • Compare body positivity and body neutrality, as well as identify the three core body neutrality emphases on body function over form, not needing to love your body to respect it and decoupling appearance from self-worth.
  • Utilize didactics and experiential exercises to help clients challenge distorted beliefs that justify disordered eating using the 'its for my health' argument, which is often a veil for body image distress.
  • Identify weight bias in nutrition and healthcare as it relates to practicing body neutrality.
