Ethical Group Telemental Health for EDs using Apps

CE Hours 1

About this course

Ample literature exists on the value of therapeutic alliance, interpersonal connection, and working alliance, contributing to group cohesion and positive change in group therapy. The degree to which group members connect with the group as an entity, individual group members, and the group facilitator, positively correlates with treatment outcomes. Those who feel emotionally connected are better able to allow themselves to be vulnerable in the group setting by sharing genuine inner experiences, supporting peers, and developing therapeutic behavioral accountability. This is true for any modality of treatment delivery, from telemental health to in-person care. Given that the number of telemental health programs have exponentially increased and a greater number of individuals are accessing this modality of care, methods for enhancing therapeutic alliance in the virtual space have never been more crucial. This session will delve deeper into this subject by firstly presenting a literature review on the efficacy of telemental health in the treatment of eating disorders and the vital role of group cohesion in positive treatment outcomes as well as how data can be used to inform care. The presenters will then describe a technology-enhanced intensive outpatient program treatment model with ethical considerations and best practices delineated for psychotherapists and dietitians. The model uses therapeutic interventions conducted within a framework of consistent group sessions and a dedicated care team fostering therapeutic alliance supported by mobile application usage. The various ways in which the applications can be utilized to augment care and strengthen therapeutic alliance will be highlighted with case examples and interactive audience discussion. Outcome data will be provided with special attention given to working alliance. Attendees will be equipped with ethical, person-centered evidence-based strategies and practical tools to leverage technology as a method of enhancing therapeutic alliance and improving outcomes in telemental group therapy.
