Ew! Treating Disgust in EDs

CE Hours 1

About this course

While fear has long been recognized as a central emotional driver in eating disorders (EDs), the role of disgust remains underexamined - both in clinical research and treatment. Disgust, often considered a "taboo" emotion, may elicit discomfort not only in clients but also in clinicians, making it an easy target for avoidance. However, emerging evidence suggests that disgust, particularly in sensory and self-directed forms, may be even more persistent and treatment-resistant than fear, warranting increased clinical attention. Disgust plays an adaptive role by protecting individuals from potential harm or contamination, but when dysregulated, it can lead to rigid avoidance of specific foods, body-related cues, or internal sensations, resulting in significant emotional distress and functional impairment.

Learning Objectives

  • Define and give two examples of sensory disgust that can lead to experiential avoidance.
  • Describe how to adapt exposure practices to effectively address disgust responses in the treatment of eating disorders.
  • Develop an individualized exposure hierarchy that targets the disgust response using a case example.
