Feelin' The Beat! Eating Disorder Heart and Vascular Complications Made Easy

CE Hours 1

About this course

Heart and vascular impact is common in eating disorders, estimated to occur in up to 80% of all cases. When sudden death occurs, it is often due to heart rhythm irregularities. These complications can occur in any eating disorder diagnosis and at any level of care. Thus, the team at large are all exposed to these issues, some more so than others yet everyone can benefit from a simplified knowledge of eating disorder cardiovascular illness. This presentation will include knowledge of pertinent heart and electrical system abnormalities and how they impact the overall health and healing of our patients. From physical signs and symptoms to ECG electrical abnormalities I will use basic language such that any member of the team will be able to understand and appreciate the impact on recovery.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the basic underlying body system changes in eating disorders that have an impact on the heart and blood vessel system in eating disorders, including the hormonal changes and basic nervous system changes that impact blood pressure and heart function.
  • Discuss the physical and health impact of heart and blood vessel changes on the eating disorder, the individual's health and appropriate treatment interventions utilizing an interdisciplinary approach.
  • Describe the electrical function of the heart and how it changes with eating disorders both on the ECG and in the manifestation of symptoms.
