From Body Image to Body Wisdom

CE Hours 1

About this course

Building a positive and collaborative relationship with the body is often seen as a final stage of eating disorders treatment. For many people, especially those living with chronic or recurring eating disorders, an adversarial relationship with their body can feel inevitable and intractable. Additionally, eating disorders professionals frequently experience confusion, frustration, hesitation and resignation when faced with the task of challenging 'negative' body image and facilitating a non-judgmental, 'positive' body- and self-image. This workshop invites participants to explore an embodiment approach to facilitating 'positive' body image and to partnering with the body' wisdom to support the recovery process from the very beginning. Through didactic presentation and experiential activities, we will examine barriers to embodiment, the impact these have on body image and the resulting subjective experience of self and self-worth. Supported by research on the relationship between sensory processing and body-image and the impact of trauma on our sensory processing system, we will explore how to start the recovery journey with targeted sensory input, a felt sense of safety and belonging and congruent cognitive schema that support an accurate perception of body, self, and self-worth.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the relationship between sensory processing, Polyvagal theory, trauma attachment injury, body image and sense of self.
  • Identify states of neurological regulation which may be contributing to body image distortions.
  • Demonstrate one body-based, sensorimotor experience that will increase the accuracy of body perception.
