Medical Weight Loss: A Journey

About this course

A growing number of clinicians in the eating disorder community are reporting that they're not sure how to 'hold space' for clients who are actively losing weight, while also maintaining a Health At Every Size mindset. In this presentation, we'll be exploring the intersection between bariatric surgery, weight loss drugs currently on the market, and quality of life for those who live in a larger body. The speaker will draw from personal lived experience of the bariatric surgery process, and will incorporate Q&A/brainstorming time with the audience.

  • Katy Alaniz , LPC-S, EMDR Trained'

    Katy Alaniz is a Dallas-based therapist, and founded The Wakeful State, a telehealth group practice, in 2019. She has been working in the field of eating disorders for 10 years, and works hard to be involved and help build community within the specialty. Katy is especially passionate about working with bariatric patients, partly due to her own experience with the medical weight loss industry. Katy is also an LPC-Supervisor and likes to help train new counselors in how disordered eating and body image issues are bound to show up whether one works with eating disorders or not. Other therapeutic specializations that are close to the speaker’s heart include LGBTQ+, ethical non-monogamy, kink, and couples work.
