Neurodivergence & Eating Disorders

CE Hours 1

About this course

Neurodiversity, encompassing conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sensory processing differences, and learning disabilities, has become a useful framework for understanding differences in cognitive functioning. Cognitive impairments, including difficulties with cognitive flexibility, central coherence and impulsivity, have been recognized as challenges for individuals with eating disorders. Increasingly, research and clinical experience recognize the high rates of neurodivergent traits among individuals with eating disorders. ADHD and ASD are demonstrated predisposing factors for development of an eating disorder. This presentation explores the intersection of neurodiversity and disordered eating, including anorexia nervosa, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and binge eating disorder. Utilizing current literature and clinical case examples, the session will review how features like sensory sensitivity, cognitive rigidity, interoceptive differences, and impulsivity may influence the onset and maintenance of eating disorders in neurodivergent individuals. The talk will also address how traditional treatment approaches can fail to meet the needs of neurodivergent individuals and may contribute to misdiagnosis, dropout or poor outcomes. Participants will learn to recognize key neurodivergent features that may impact eating behaviors and treatment engagement. Practical recommendations for screening, diagnosis and adapting interventions, including the use of neuroaffirming language and accommodations will be presented. By shifting towards a neurodiversity-informed model of care, providers can offer more inclusive and effective treatment for all individuals with eating disorders.
