Somatic Experiencing-Binge Eating

CE Hours 1

About this course

The question that I will be exploring pertains to the efficacy of Somatic Experiencing for the treatment of Binge Eating Disorders. My presentation aims to resource eating disorder professionals with tools to understand the underlying physiology that gets interrupted in individuals struggling with binge eating symptoms. Attendees will learn about titration and pendulation; the tenants of Somatic Experiencing and the unique role that the tracking of physiology plays in restoring harmony to the autonomic nervous system, thus armoring our clients with more agency in managing psycho physiological dysregulation. We will be covering the threat response cycle, pervasive trauma that impacts the nervous system, how our autonomic nervous system relates to binge eating behavior, and basic protocol to help our clients in the container of therapy. The target audience for this presentation are dietitians, nutritionists, therapists, and somatic practitioners alike who want to understand how to integrate somatic work into their whole person centered approach to the treatment of binge eating disorder.

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize the efficacy of somatic experiencing as a modality to treat the network of psychophysiological symptoms that comprise binge eating behavior.
  • Demonstrate pendulation and titration; the tenants of Somatic Experiencing as a modality to increase interoceptive awareness, complete the threat response cycle, and interrupt behavioral patterning in (BED).
  • Describe pervasive patterning and thwarted attempts to cultivate safety in the body that create states of fixity in disordered eating behavior.

Course Instructor(s)

  • Cody Gauthier, LCSW

As a proud therapist (LCSW), my passion and specialization centers around trauma in relationships and how they manifest in the here and now. In my practice, I've noticed that meaningful therapeutic growth emerges through three foundational pillars that form the cornerstone of our work together: Authenticity, Curiosity, and Vulnerability. My clients express the need to live in alignment with their true self, develop a deeper understanding of their inner world, and develop the capacity to be present even in times of uncertainty.

I believe healing happens in relationship, not in isolation. My specialties and the extensive training I have in trauma healing modalities such as somatic experiencing, EMDR, IFS, and Gestalt Therapy serve the central goal of helping my clients discover and build a relationship with our whole self.
