Strategies for Virtual Eating Disorder Treatment

CE Hours 1

About this course

This session combines the presentation of original research with collaborative elements to identify and advance best practices in virtual eating disorder care. We will summarize up-to-date findings from the literature and introduce new data from a mixed-methods study regarding patients' and providers' experiences with virtual eating disorder treatment. Interactive elements such as small group discussions and in-the-moment electronic response questions will engage session attendees in reflecting on and sharing their own experiences delivering eating disorder treatment in virtual settings. Presenters will facilitate these small-group discussions on focused questions with the goal of generating provider insights and processing our collective lived experiences. The presentation and discussion will focus on reviewing symptom-specific approaches while also examining the unique experiences and requirements of neurodiverse populations. We will explore patient experiences to derive lessons that can be applied more broadly in telehealth settings. Attendees will leave with not only an understanding of emerging research but also with co-created knowledge to directly inform and improve their adaptation of eating disorder care for virtual settings.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe current research on eating disorder treatment in virtual-care settings.
  • Explain how populations with diverse and distinct needs (such as neurodiverse individuals engaging in eating disorder treatment) may have unique needs with respect to virtual care settings.
  • Discuss emerging research paired with personal insights that can improve adaptation of eating disorder care for telehealth.
