The Art and Science of Validation: The Use of Emotion Coaching for EDs

CE Hours 1

About this course

In the demanding field of eating disorder treatment, clinicians frequently encounter a significant therapeutic challenge. Providers often perceive themselves as facing a suboptimal and binary choice when clients struggle: either directly confront the client's behaviors, which risks escalating conflict and rupturing therapeutic rapport, or express understanding of the client's internal draw towards eating disorder behaviors, potentially leading to a sense of complicity with the illness or 'accommodating the eating disorder.' This predicament can be akin to navigating a precarious balance. The Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) framework offers a promising resolution to this dilemma through the implementation of Emotion Coaching. Emotion Coaching provides a structured, three-step process for providers to authentically validate a client's or caregiver's emotions, integrating both emotional and practical support. Within this framework, providers can offer genuine reflection of the client's struggle, fostering an expansion of emotional vocabulary and promoting co-regulation. Crucially, this approach simultaneously allows for the establishment of necessary limits and the articulation of concerns pertaining to health and safety, which are paramount in eating disorder treatment. Part art and part science, Emotion Coaching embodies the principle of 'both/and,' skillfully integrating empathy with clear boundaries. This 60-minute interactive workshop will delve into the theoretical underpinnings of Emotion Coaching and equip providers with effective strategies for explaining this tool to caregivers, supported by relevant research. Participants will engage in practical exercises, including script development and role-playing, to hone their Emotion Coaching skills, thereby gaining a valuable tool for their most challenging cases. The workshop will also explore adaptations of this skill for application with caregivers and in consultative capacities.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the theoretical underpinnings of Emotion Coaching (EC) within the EFFT framework to distinguish it from therapeutic approaches that rely solely on confrontation or accommodation.
  • Formulate a structured, three-step Emotion Coaching script for a challenging clinical scenario that successfully integrates authentic emotional validation with the establishment of necessary health and safety limits.
  • Demonstrate the application of the Emotion Coaching skill by role-playing its use with a client, caregiver, or consultee to promote emotional co-regulation and support measurable treatment outcomes.

Course Instructor(s)

  • Bryn Miller , MA, LPC, CEDS-C

Bryn Miller is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Consultant (CEDS-C) and a Certified Advanced Therapist in Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT). She is a founding board member of COPro, Colorado’s primary organization for eating disorder professionals supported by the non-profit The Eating Disorder Foundation, and the Clinical Supervisor for the Accessible Care for Everybody (ACE) grant-funded eating disorder therapy program. Bryn also serves as the Family Services Advisor for EDCare, a multi-state eating disorder program.

With over a decade working with adolescents and young adults with eating disorders alongside their parents and caregivers at every level of care, Bryn is passionate about supporting both individuals and their support teams with the goal of whole family healing.

In service of the mission to better support caregivers, Bryn founded Bryn Miller Parent Coaching and developed her signature, EFFT-informed 5-Step Parent Coaching Program, The Response Roadmap. Through live groups, virtual workshops and her on-demand online course, Bryn empowers parents to access their sense of calm and confidence to better connect to their children and the parents they want to be, regardless of the struggles.

When Bryn is not working, she is writing, meditating, embarrassing herself in a hip-hop dance class and trying (largely unsuccessfully) to keep up with her own two small children.
