Unlocking the Promise of Evidence-based Practice for Eating Disorders: Activating the Power of Exposure Therapy Using a Case Formulation Approach

CE Hours 1

About this course

Eating disorders (EDs) are challenging to treat and associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Research indicates that therapist underutilize evidence-based interventions for EDs and comorbid conditions and that exposure therapy is particularly underutilized. One reason for this underutilization involves negative attitudes and beliefs about such interventions and their associated manuals. The aim of this presentation is to challenge some of these beliefs by reducing common confusion about the difference between evidence-based interventions and evidence-based practice. In addition, this presentation will show how Person’s case formulation approach can be used to embrace evidence-based practice for EDs with an emphasis on the use of exposure therapy.

Learning Objectives

  • Define evidence-based practice and explain the difference between this and empirically-supported interventions and evidence-based interventions.
  • Explain Persons’ Case Formulation Approach.
  • Describe how the use of the Case Formulation Approach advances the use of exposure therapy for eating disorders and common comorbid disorders.
