Untangling the Web: Therapeutic interventions for treating co-occurring C-PTSD and Eating Disorders

CE Hours 1

About this course

Untangling the Web: Therapeutic interventions for treating co-occurring C-PTSD and Eating Disorders Research suggests that between 20 and 40% of individuals with eating disorders meet the proposed criteria for complex PTSD (C-PTSD). This co-occurrence presents unique clinical challenges that often influence the length and trajectory of the therapeutic process. Among these challenges are persistent avoidance and deep shame, both of which can interfere with treatment progress and outcomes. While most providers recognize the importance of addressing trauma in their clients, it can be difficult to determine the safest and most effective ways to implement treatment. This presentation will explore the interaction between C-PTSD and eating disorders and provide insight into important factors to consider when planning for and delivering treatment. Participants will be introduced to practical, evidence-based strategies for addressing C-PTSD and eating disorders simultaneously. These strategies will include Written Exposure Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and other compassion focused interventions which will be discussed for both individual and group settings. A case example will be provided to highlight common symptomatology, outline the treatment planning process, and provide insight into how concurrent treatment can enhance recovery of both C-PTSD and eating disorders. Following this presentation, attendees will have a deeper understanding of the complexity of these cases as well as an improved ability to identify the appropriateness and safety of treating C-PTSD and eating disorders at an outpatient level of care.
