2026, 10 April, Richmond: Recognizing Adoption-Related Trauma in Eating Disorder Treatment

CE Hours 1

About this live event

Please email richmondiaedp@gmail.com to register! Adopted individuals experience elevated rates of trauma exposure, attachment disruption, ambiguous loss, and identity-related distress—factors that may significantly influence eating disorder presentation and recovery. Despite this, many eating disorder professionals receive little formal training in adoption competence. As a result, adoption-related trauma dynamics may go unrecognized in assessment, family involvement, and treatment planning. This intermediate-level session provides a trauma-informed framework to help clinicians recognize and respond to adoption-related factors that may complicate eating disorder care. Participants will examine key mechanisms linking family separation trauma and eating disorder symptoms, identify clinical red flags, and explore interdisciplinary treatment considerations to improve adoption- informed practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain three mechanisms by which family separation trauma may influence eating disorder presentation.
  • Select at least four assessment questions that identify adoption-related attachment disruption in clients receiving eating disorder treatment.
  • Critique one common clinical assumption about adoption that may interfere with effective interdisciplinary eating disorder care.
