2026, 10 November, iaedp Webinar: Eating Disorder Prevention Is Suicide Prevention: Especially in the Military and Veteran Communities

CE Hours 1

About this live event

Eating disorder prevention and suicide prevention are closely connected in military and Veteran communities. This presentation examines how eating disorders and disordered eating can intersect with low energy availability, malnutrition, cognitive and physical functioning, trauma, shame, stigma, isolation, and barriers to treatment. Participants will explore how physiological and psychological effects of inadequate nutrition may compound existing vulnerabilities and how military-specific pressures and treatment barriers can contribute to delayed recognition and care. Current research, including Veteran-specific evidence and the Department of Veterans Affairs’ recognition of eating disorders as a suicide-risk factor, will be reviewed. Participants will learn practical strategies for earlier identification, integrated assessment, referral, and interdisciplinary care.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe current evidence regarding eating disorders, mortality, suicide-related risk, and eating-disorder symptoms in military and Veteran populations.
  • Explain how malnutrition and problematic low energy availability can affect physical functioning, cognition, mood, emotional regulation, and psychological well-being.
  • Identify military- and Veteran-specific factors that may contribute to eating-disorder vulnerability, delayed disclosure, treatment avoidance, and barriers to care
  • Recognize the interaction among eating-disorder symptoms, trauma, shame, stigma, isolation, psychiatric comorbidity, and suicide-risk factors while distinguishing association from causation.
  • Apply an integrated approach to screening, assessment, referral, and interdisciplinary care that addresses both eating-disorder symptoms and suicide risk.

A nationally recognized lived experience expert, Leah draws on more than 20 years of military service, as well as her experiences as a military spouse and military mother, to bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and the realities of military life.

Through SEA WAVES, she has developed innovative education initiatives, built strategic partnerships across the military and behavioral health communities, and become a trusted voice on the intersection of eating disorders, military culture, and suicide prevention.
